11 May 2011
Ilmika Kulla continues to expand her fashion world from custom designs to runways to international fame dreams. She is set to launch her women line in 2011 in New York City. Her vision is to offer customers, in particular women a look where they can feel comfortable but sexy.
Born on September 20, 1987, in Lushnja, Albania, Ilmika Kulla has come a long way from the days of dressing her barbie dolls. Growing up she expressed her passion for fashion by sketching designs in her notebook, and creating dresses for herself. Although she knew the challenges ahead of having her own label ‘Ilmika Kulla’ and boutique, she has succeeded in making stylish designs, showcased in several fashion shows in Connecticut.
“My style would have to be classy and elegant. That’s what I go for in my designs. I love the old elegant look of the 1950s Europe. I want the girl who wears my clothes to look classy and sophisticated.”
Ilmika Kulla is an innovative designer creating sophisticated stylish look. Her women clothing line is the definition of sophistication, class and taste.
“Fashion design for me is my passion. I was born to design. I would love to design for the Albanian female singers, the American celebrities, and for everyone who loves my stylish look. My dream is to open a boutique in Tirana, and I would love to premiere my fashion show in New York City and Albania.”
Fashion Designer Ilmika Kulla is becoming the new popular name for classy elegant designs. Winner of 1st Prize for ‘Best Designer’ in 2010 her fashion style exhumes simplicity, elegance and sexiness.
Ilmika Kulla was the stylist for actress Greta Zenelaj during the screening of her movie ‘In The Woods’ in New York at the Ny Film Festival and Producers Club Theater Screening.
“ I was happy to design for Greta Zenelaj. The purple dress is made of stretch material. I love stretch material I think it fits well any body type. I decided to do a slit to make it sexy. The green dress is a velvet and I personally think velvet is back in style. I chose to do an open back on that one, again for a little sexy touch. I tried to create something sexy and elegant at the same time. The colors are not too summery so I though they would be good for this time a year.” said designer Ilmika Kulla.
Interview with Designer Ilmika Kulla
How did you get started in fashion design? Did you consider going to school for fashion?
I have making clothes since I was five years old. At first I would make clothes for my Barbee, and slowly started making little dresses for me. My first piece was a vest that I made from a scarf. I tough myself how to sew really, and I would design on my notebooks. My dream growing up was to go to school in NY, FIT was my dream. But when I graduated high school I realized that it wasn’t possible because it was far for me and I couldn’t leave my family. So I went to school for art instead. I love art as well.
What do you enjoy most about your profession?
What I love about making clothes, mostly dresses, is being able to create, and express myself in fabric. I also love when I am making dresses for girls and they are so happy to wear my dress. The smile on their face is priceless. It makes me happy.
Do you have a signature style or favorite style?
My style I think would have to be classy and elegant. That is what I go for. I love the old elegant look of the 1950s Europe. I want the girl who wears my clothes to look classy and sophisticated.
Any plans for having your own boutique or retail store?
Having my own boutique is a true passion of mine and it would be a dream come true. I am currently working on introducing my full line for women in New York City.
What inspires you in your designs and creations?
I get inspired by everything. Sometimes I could just be sitting down somewhere and I will get a vision of a dress out of nowhere. Sometimes girls inspire me… If I look at a girl I can get an idea of what would look good on her, or if I have a theme in mind I will get different designs.
Who would be the ideal person/women to design for?
I would love to design for the Albanian female singers, the American celebrities, and for everyone who loves my stylish look. My dream is to open a boutique in Tirana, and I would love to premiere my fashion show in New York City and Albania.
What do you find challenging about fashion as business?
The challenging part is transitioning to a business. I have a lot of ideas and designs and things would run a lot smoother if I were established in my business. But the fact that I get many requests from people who want to wear my designs I feel it is an accomplishment in itself.
Can you tell us about the 2011 collection?
At the moment I am working on a couple of custom dresses. I have showcased in Connecticut during fall 2010, at a fund raiser fashion show. I participated in the designer competition and received the 1st place – Best designer award.
In February I showcased in New Heaven, where I showed cocktail dresses, simple and classy designs. I chose purple and pink .
What is your advice for young women aspiring to be fashion designers?
My advice to young aspiring designers is to express yourself, the way that best suits you. For me it is classy and elegant that brings confidence in a woman. | Prishtina Press
