Sexy Indian singer-songwriter Nishi and her band The Nights have made New York City’s underground music scene their home. From packed shows at famed East Village hangout The Sidewalk Cafe, to established rock venues like Pianos on the lower east side, music fans are coming by the droves to hear the alluring voice and songs of this chanteuse who works as a lawyer by day and is a singer/actress by night. Already many have signed up to see Nishi’s next LIVE show at New York City’s oldest rock club, The Bitter End, on January 18th.
Nishi, an Indian-American singer originally from New Delhi, India, whose family is from the south-Indian state of Kerala, came to New York when she was 5 years old. She has been producing music since 2003 and performing in New York City since 2005. Nishi produced her first EP in 2005, a self-titled demo CD of six original tracks which spawned two distinct hits: the infectious Indian dance number ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ and the haunting piano love ballad ‘Story.’ These and other songs from her 1st EP were featured on Indian radio and television stations from the U.K. to Canada and the U.S. and her newest dance single ‘Release Me’, released this past May 2011, has garnered even more attention due to its sensual lyrics and sexy Indian drum-driven beats.

Nishi’s music successfully combines Indian rhythm with American rock and pop to create a style and sound all her own. With intelligent and thoughtful lyrics, it’s no wonder that one of her songs, the haunting piano love ballad ‘Story’, was picked up and licensed to the new Sailor Moon movie. You remember Sailor Moon, the captivating Japanese anime cartoon that ran on American television in the late ’90′s about a girl who fights justice by moonlight? Nishi’s song ‘Story’ was featured as the opening title track in the new film which screened at Webster Hall on December 4th, 2011.
Fans of the Sailor Moon movie loved Nishi’s song ‘Story’ so much, they clamored for its release on iTunes. Nishi, who is currently producing her new dance/pop album ‘Master of My Fate’ for release in 2012, is re-producing ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ and ‘Story’ to be included on the new album. Nishi was therefore reluctant to release an older version of her song, but after hearing from a multitude of fans who e-mailed her and contacted her on Facebook and Twitter, Nishi responded and released ‘Story’ from her 2005 EP on iTunes and CdBaby and has promised fans who purchase the 2005 version, free downloads of the new ‘Story’ from her new album in 2012. Directed by Elana A. Mugdan, who specifically chose Nishi’s song ‘Story’ because of its beauty and powerful lyrics, the Sailor Moon movie surpassed 100,000 views within one week of its premiere on YouTube, currently has 172,000+ views and is featured on MTV Geek.

Nishi’s new dance music has achieved even greater attention. ‘Release Me’, the first dance single to be released off her new album, is a sexy, romantic Indian number launched last May at a Bollywood dance party in Washington D.C. organized by Bollywood filmmaker Manan Singh Katohora and Soni Sonia. The song and its release drew the attention of local and national radio and television stations which featured Nishi and her music. Nishi notably interviewed and sang live for 120+ million worldwide on Washington D.C. based international broadcast network Voice of America and its program Border Crossings hosted by Larry London. Nishi’s dance single ‘Release Me’ is available on iTunes, CdBaby and Amazon.com and plans have been underway to film a Bollywood style cinematic music video with Nishi to star opposite Kal Parekh, currently of ABC’s primetime drama Pan Am.
Nishi, who is also a professional actress who performs in Off-Broadway plays & musicals and acts for film and television, performs regularly in New York City with her band, The Nights. Nishi’s name in her native Indian language means ‘the night’ and she has said the only name she could give for the musicians who support her on stage is her own name, as they represent everything she is. Nishi’s Nights are currently comprised of keyboardist Raul Anadon, drummer Chris DeRosa, bassist Colin Gittens, guitarist Shan Kenner, guitarist John Plenge, percussionist Luiz Santos and backup vocalists Joyce Laoagan and Amalia Tinsley.
